Capacity Development for the Pacific Islands Marine Protected Areas Community
Yap Training GRP Work
Capacity development for the Pacific Islands Marine Protected Areas Community – Micronesia Program (2013 – 2015), and: Advancing marine and terrestrial management in Micronesia (2015 – 2017), both funded by the United States Department of the Interior, Office of Insular Affairs.
MCT leverages these programs to co-coordinate the PIMPAC-Micronesia program along with the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. PIMPAC is a long-term capacity building program and social network of governments, non-governmental organizations, and regional partners. Its mission is to provide continuous opportunities for the sharing of information, expertise, practice, and experience to develop and strengthen site-based and ecosystem-based management capacity with integrated climate adaptation strategies into management plans. Through this PIMPAC framework, MCT leverages local and international advisers and technical experts when a new tool or topic is introduced a to help design trainings, modify tools as needed, and ensure that the transfer of technical information is accurate. As an example of the types of trainings MCT routinely helps support under these programs, MCT recently supported community engagement and capacity building for socioeconomic monitoring in Yap State of the Federated States of Micronesia. Trainees included participants from Tamil communities, other Yap State municipalities, local conservation organizations and government agencies, as well as participants from Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. |
